This was our first time staying downtown, and it was a nice change. The casinos were closely situated as opposed to the ones on the strip. I felt safe at all times. The GN is a nice hotel, not as fancy as the Bellagio but much, much cheaper. The casino was clean, although more crowded at night than I expected. Only downsides were 1. The room was warm, no matter if the A/c was on or not. 2. The lighting was poor. But since you don't spend much time in the room, it really didn't matter.

I never did find the loose slots promised by so many. I lost money big time. But I didn't plan on winning, and I had fun, so it was still a good trip. I would advise staying away from the casinos on fringe, i.e. Lady Luck, Gold Spike. These places are real pits. Binion's has a cheap breakfast available in the basement from 11pm to 7am, and it usually wasn't crowded, but the atmosphere was dark and depressing. Lots of older people eat here.

Transportation to/from the airport was pricey--28 dollars plus tip for a cab each way. My sister doesn't believe in travelling by bus, because they tend to pack you in like cattle during the busy hours. Getting through security at the airport on the trip back was hell, so plan for a little extra time.
